Many don’t realize it, but the habits these apps form are being ingrained into our minds and behavior. “Countless hours spent on multiple different apps is definitely showing some long-term effects.” “Social media can be fun and entertaining in moderation but without conscious effort people can get carried away,” Cromer said. These results could be skewed by the poll taking place on Instagram itself but the result is still overwhelming. When asked which social media app UNCA students use the most on the Blue Banner Instagram story, 60% of respondents reported Instagram was their app of choice, with Twitter, Reddit and TikTok receiving the remaining 40% of votes cast. The algorithms apps like Instagram use are designed to show the user personalized content that will make them want to continue scrolling. With 1.3 billion users in the month of January, Instagram is a juggernaut in the world of scrolling. “I feel like I lose all sense of time and have no control over when and how the scrolling ends.”īoth Cromer and Lawida reported Instagram as the app they spent the most time scrolling on. “I’m often scrolling for hours, especially late at night,” Lawida said. UNCA sophomore Luke Lawida shares similar experiences. It’s enjoyable in the moment, but it distracts me too much and severely lowers my productivity.” “A random post tends to catch my attention, I get thrown down a rabbit hole of content and I lack the desire to stop. “I definitely get carried away with looking at social media on a daily basis,” Cromer said. Like many people in our age group, UNCA sophomore Ryan Cromer struggles with being sucked into the streams of content. On many occasions I’ve continuously disrupted my sleep cycle, missed out on doing something that I wanted or needed to do and completely lost all sense of focus on tasks that should’ve taken priority. I fall prey to this exact phenomenon on a regular basis. When dopamine is produced in this way, it increases difficulty for our brains to produce dopamine through healthier and more “natural” methods. The ease of scrolling through content on these apps is extremely stimulating to our brains. This behavior becomes addictive and habit forming and can lead or contribute to obsessive-compulsive behaviors, depression and anxiety.Īpps and websites such as Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, Reddit and YouTube Shorts are specifically designed to make the user crave more fast content. The quick nature of scrolling through endless content triggers the brain’s dopamine reward system, creating a sort of neurological “high”. This “infinite scroll” can take up our valuable time and impact our productivity and attentiveness, among other traits. It’s a situation that almost all of us seem to find ourselves in we sit down, begin scrolling through content on our phones or computers, and before we know it, an entire hour has passed. You will find letters that inspire you to understand visuals and imagery, or go on a virtual shopping spree or even disrupt dinner plans. Here are some of the best internet newsletters that I find myself opening very frequently, and actually reading and not bin-ing. In Nilanjana Roy’s words, “My inbox chimes with the arrival of newsletters from a few favourite authors, and this grey and shivery day is instantly brightened.” From email bulk-send to Tinyletter to the rise of the phenomenal Substack, newsletters are here to stay. They feel fiercely personal when they land in your inbox with words from someone, a friend or a stranger, telling you marvelous things. Newsletters always have a more special charm than say blog posts or an opinion piece. Forget labels here, they are great reads!). I have a special affinity towards literary newsletters and they top the charts of my most opened newsletters, but I also found myself frequently hooked to these culture newsletters (some are literary-ish too. They are very very good and I think you might love them too. The newsletters mentioned below mostly tiptoe on culture and related topics. I began listing 5 favourites and now the list has grown to 16. It feels silly to give a disclaimer that this list is too short to feature every single awesome newsletter out there. Or perhaps I should have titled it as the best culture newsletters to subscribe?Īs all lists usually are, this is a personal list from the many wonderful newsletters out there in the big internet world. This is what led to this compilation of the best internet newsletters to subscribe to. I also began to notice patterns in the kind of newsletters that I gravitate towards-mostly the ones that tell/feature a good story or give me a dozen cool links to check. As I examined my interests, I realized I do not open many of the popular (this list features some big newsletters too, btw) newsletters. I neither had the time and sometimes my interest in a topic would’ve dimmed few weeks after I subscribed. Few months ago, I realized I subscribed to more newsletters than I could read. Current affairs, profiles, exclusive interviews you name it, I’ve got my name on the subscriber list. It is really easy to make me subscribe to a newsletter. Until this is fixed, users should manually type the URL or navigate to the site via a search engine when in doubt. To enroll in paperless for your account, start by reading the terms and conditions below. “In general, users must be very careful and pay attention to the URL when entering personal information. Zheng himself offers advice to users: use a password manager, and try and spot phishing attacks before you click on any links. Instead, he said, a better approach begins by assuming that phishing attacks will succeed: “Site administrators should assume that the credentials of some of their users were stolen (which in almost 100% of the cases will be true), and take adequate measures to identify account takeover, like irregular device, irregular geo-location or abnormal activity in the account.” “In order to protect website users, forcing them to use strong passwords and to replace them frequently is insufficient, since in this case it would be completely ineffective to prevent the attack. Itsik Mantin, director of security research at Imperva, said that common advice to web users falls down when such simple attacks work. Google didn’t comment beyond referring to Zheng’s blogpost, and Mozilla didn’t comment at publication time but a spokesperson later said: “We continue to investigate ways to further address visual spoofing attacks, which are complex to fix with technology just in the browser alone.” Zheng says: “This bug was reported to Chrome and Firefox on January 20, 2017…The Chrome team has since decided to include the fix in Chrome 58, which should be available around April 25.” Mozilla, however, declined to fix it, arguing that it’s Apple’s problem to solve: “it is sadly the responsibility of domain owners to check for whole-script homographs and register them”. And though it may be obvious in the Guardian’s font that something’s up, the sans serif typeface used as standard by those browsers leave the two indistinguishable. But that doesn’t work if the whole thing is written in the same alphabet.Īpple’s Safari and Microsoft’s Edge both still spot that Zheng’s spoof domain is a fraud, but Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox don’t, instead displaying the Cyrillic domain name. A common approach is to reject any domain name containing multiple alphabets. Some browsers will keep an eye out for such tricks, and display the underlying domain name if they sense mischief. It may not be obvious at first glance, but ‘а’ uses the Cyrillic ‘а’ (U+0430) rather than the ASCII “a” (U+0041). “It is possible to register domains such as ‘’, which is equivalent to ‘а’. “From a security perspective, Unicode domains can be problematic because many Unicode characters are difficult to distinguish from common ASCII characters,” Zheng writes. That’s useful if you want to register a domain name in Chinese or Arabic script, or even just correctly spelled French or German – anything that can be represented with the Unicode standard can be registered, even emoji – but it’s also opened up a whole new avenue of misdirection for malicious actors to take advantage of, by finding characters in other alphabets which look similar to Latin ones. For a long time, domain names could only be written in Latin characters without diacritics, but since 1998 it’s actually been possible to write them in other alphabets too. The proof-of-concept domain was put together by Xudong Zheng, a security researcher who wanted to demonstrate the problem with the way domain names can be registered and displayed. Companies go out of business, original serial numbers or proof-of-purchase documents are lost or vendors refuse to honor the version I lost. I’ve lost track of how many programs I paid for and downloaded, only to lose them forever after a system crash or corrupt backup, or buying a new computer. Even if you download it from the Internet, pay the extra money to have them send you a physical disk. If you’re a non-subscription-based user, always get your software on a disk. Now, I have to be connected to the Internet and “signed in” to read or create a simple PDF file and it takes forever! After a few weeks of that, I uninstalled it and reinstalled the old Pro 2017 version that I had on a disk. It used to be on my hard drive, accessible and on demand in a few seconds. One aggravation for me is the new Adobe Acrobat DC. Then one day, you wake up and realize that you could have purchased the program for half the cost of all those fees (that you are now obligated to pay in perpetuity). Once you invest time, money, and training, and have projects created in a specific program, it’s hard to let go. The plight of Adobe refugeesĪdobe’s switch to subscription services left a particularly large group of user “refugees” looking for alternatives. Incidentally, you can buy all three Affinity programs (Photo, Design, & Publisher) for less than what it costs to rent the Creative Suite apps for three months. The graphical interface is user-friendly, the Help guides are easy to understand, and the menus are quite intuitive. Familiar features include text wrap, drop caps, facing page spreads, tables, advanced typography, artistic text and text styles, plus an amazing set of tools. Big plus: Scribus is a cross-platform application that runs on Windows, Mac OS X, and Gnu/Linux systems.Īnother Affinity success story, this desktop publisher has all the great bells and whistles of the competition that I have used, but for less than $50. It also offers layout and design templates for books, magazines, and newspapers. Scribus is an intuitively designed desktop publisher with loads of predesigned templates to create brochures, posters, greeting cards, invitations, business cards, and more. Easy to learn, easy to use, easy Help language. This little program is no InDesign or Affinity Publisher, but if you just need a simple, free program with nice templates-and without all the complicated menus, features, and effects-this one’s for you. Spring Publisher ( free), Spring Publisher Pro ( $23.95) I still say PageMaker was the all-time best desktop publishing program, but it’s no longer supported by Adobe or the operating systems. There are no substitutions for this group unless you want to use Microsoft Word or another word processor, but those applications are not really equipped to function as a layout and design program. InDesign and the programs listed below are page layout, design, and desktop publishing software. A big plus: There are over 8,000 History steps for Undo/Redo. You get lots of new presets for symbols, shapes, and lines more options for custom gradients, textures, and styles and unlimited layers, masks, and groups. Also nice: the adjustable line weights, which are based on speed, pressure, and width. Very similar to Adobe Illustrator, Affiniity Designer’s most distinctive features include the Multi Stroke and Fill, which, among other things, stacks strokes and fills as layers so they can support their own blending and gradients. But my all-time favorite feature is the Picture Tubes, similar to Photoshop’s custom brushes, but in full 16-bit color. The Film effects are spectacular, the new SmartClone feature is amazing, and the Refine Brush, which finely details selections around difficult outlines such as hair and animal fur is superb. It provides hundreds of excellent features such as Capture, which is much better than Photoshop’s Snipping Tool. I’ve used it since version 5 and have continued to upgrade through the current versions. PaintShop Pro ( $79.99, or $99.99 for the pro version) I also appreciate that GIMP works on multiple platforms, uses minimal system resources, and is super-easy to use. I especially like the Borders Sparkles, Reflections, and Gradient Flare effects and the Whirl and Pinch features. See Alvin Alexander’s blog for all the cool stuff GIMP can do. GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) offers 130-plus amazing filters and special effects. The filters and special effects are what distinguish them from one another and from Photoshop. Affinity and Paint Shop Pro have a few more features than GIMP does, and all three have fewer than Photoshop. Adobe Photoshop alternativesĪll three of the programs listed below provide effective photo-editing tools, from sizing, cropping, and retouching to noise reduction, color correction, and more. See PC World’s ongoing reviews of PDF editor programs for the best third-party Acrobat programs. |
